Song Review: "Hawái" by The Weeknd and Maluma

The Weeknd just released a remixed single of "Hawái" with the original artist Maluma. This bilingual song is the perfect debut for The Weeknd to break out into the Latin music market.

"Hawái" starts with a soft melody that gives The Weeknd his listeners’ full attention. With lyrics like, “I don’t want marriage / I’d rather go half on a baby / Cause at least I know that it’s not temporary.” describes the story of a broken relationship caused by difference in wants within the relationship. This then leads into Maluma’s chorus in Spanish that opens the melody of the song that has a heavier Latin pop bass and tropical flair.

Maluma’s chorus describes how his ex is posting on instagram and flaunting their happiness over their new relationship. However, Maluma claims that it is all fake and that even with vacations in Hawaii and beautiful pictures, it means nothing because it’s all fake and that his ex really wants to be with Maluma and is “lying to [themself] and him to make [Maluma] jealous”.

Overall, this song perfectly fits The Weeknd’s style. Through the discussions of relationship difficulties and the easily danced to melody, it is a seamless song for The Weeknd to collaborate on. This song is a perfect crossover song and would easily be enjoyed by people in to pop and Latin pop.
