The Rochester Americans had their first pre-game skate of the 2021 AHL season Friday morning as they get ready for their 65th season opener tonight against the Utica Comets.
The Amerks have won five of their last six season openers dating back to the 2014-2015 season. But this season will be like any other.
This year, the AHLs scheduling format consists of Rochester playing only Utica, Syracuse, and Cleveland over the 32-game stretch. There will also be no Calder Cup playoffs due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
However, one thing to watch for tonight is Rochester's youth movement. The Amerks have 11 rookies on their opening night roster, including the Sabres 2018 second-round selection Mattias Samuelsson.
The puck drop for Friday's game is at 7:05.
