ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Rochester Red Wings were defeated by the Worcester Red Sox by a score of 7-0 in the final game of their series on Sunday. Rochester went 1-5 in the series and have now lost nine of their last 10 games.

"We were in it, and then we gave up that six spot and the offense just never got going again," Red Wings manager Matt LeCroy said. "We've got to keep going at it and keep fighting and hopefully we can get on a nice little roll here and win some ballgames."

Right-hander Chase Solesky got the ball for the Red Wings in this one. The 27-year-old hurled 5.1 innings, gave up seven hits and four runs (all earned) while striking out five.

"We needed him to go as deep as he could go for us because we're a little short," LeCroy said. "Anytime you can bounce back and face a team the second time in a week, I thought he did a nice job."

After two scoreless innings to start the game from Solesky and WooSox starter Shane Drohan, Worcester scored first in the top of the third. After nine-hitter Corey Rosier led off the inning with a single, Red Sox No. 3 prospect Marcelo Mayer drove him home with a two-out single up the middle that went off the glove of a diving Jackson Cluff to give Worcester a 1-0 lead.

Mayer struck again in the top of the sixth. The WooSox shortstop followed up a single from Vaughn Grissom with a two-run homer to dead center to extend Worcester's lead to 3-0. The home run left the bat at 107.6 mph and traveled 414 feet.

Right-hander Matthew Bollenbacher made his Triple-A debut for the Red Wings in relief of Solesky in the sixth. It wasn't the debut Bollenbacher had imagined though as the righty immediately allowed two runners on base via a walk and a hit by pitch. Bollenbacher then gave up a towering grand slam from Mark Kolozsvary to put Rochester down 7-0.

"[Bollenbacher] was here to give us a body and you always pull for the kid that's come up," LeCroy said. "He's never been at a higher level before and you're asking a lot from him, but to his credit, he gave us one-plus [innings]."

Position player Jackson Cluff came into pitch for Rochester in the top of the ninth. The 28-year-old who started the game at shortstop for the Red Wings featured a knuckleball and struck out a batter in his scoreless inning.

"He's got a knuckleball that he always messes around with," LeCroy said. "When I asked him if he'd ever pitched, he said 'I have.' I felt pretty comfortable he could throw it over."

With the loss, the Red Wings fall to 4-15 on the season and sit in last place in the IL East. Worcester improves to 10-9 and fifth place in the IL East with the win.

The Red Wings will have the day off tomorrow before traveling to Buffalo to start its second series against the Bisons after the two teams split a pair of games in the opening series of the season. First pitch is scheduled for Tuesday, April 22 at 6:05 p.m.
