BROCKPORT, NY—With this year’s election being many Gen Z voters’ first opportunity to vote in a presidential election, there are lots of questions about what matters to them.
To answer some of these questions, 89.1 the Point organized a survey in the entrance of Drake Memorial Library, from October 16th to the 23rd. The form had three major questions. Who do people prefer for New York State Senate District 56? Who do people prefer for President? And lastly, what issues are the most important for candidates to address in this election cycle?
The survey also asked about people’s age. 88% of respondents fell into the 18-25-year-old category, with the remaining 12% being between 26 and 55.
From the surveyed group, 60% of voters want Kamala Harris for President, 39% want Donald Trump and one participant wants a third-party candidate.
The vote for Brockport’s representative in New York State’s Senate did not follow the same pattern as the presidential race, with 72% of the surveyed group preferring democrat Jeremy Cooney over republican Jim VanBrederode.
The final question was a fill-in the blank about what policies students care about the most. The most common answer was the economy, with 19% of responses. Immigration was second at 18% of replies. Other popular responses were healthcare at 14%, abortion and reproductive rights at 9% and foreign policy at 8%.
