BATAVIA, N.Y. -- #4 Notre Dame Batavia boys basketball cruised through their first sectional matchup with an 85-29 win over #13 Alfred-Almond in the first round of class C3 sectionals. The 16-5 Fighting Irish had a significant numbers advantage with 13 rostered players compared to 1-19 Alfred-Almond's eight players.
The Fighting Irish showed their domination by sticking to key foundations of their game. Three pointers, layups, free throws, and defense. They controlled the game in so many different ways that it was hard to know what they were going to do next.
"We play defenses. We shoot the three we try and get around the floor." Notre Dame Batavia head coach Mike Rapone said. "That's what we like to do. You know, three's, three's, layups or free throws, and we try and move the ball around."
Alfred-Almond took an early lead but the momentum quickly shifted in favor of the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame Batavia took a 25-9 advantage in the first quarter.
The second quarter was full of the Fighting Irish taking the ball down the wings and into the paint and getting layup after layup. The momentum they had in the first only grew as they held Alfred-Almond to only two points in the second quarter. By half, Notre Dame Batavia led 42-11.
The Fighting Irish continued to dominate through the third. Jaden Sherwood showed impressive foot work scoring multiple layups.
The fourth quarter was officially a blowout and so the scoring started to come for Alfred-Almond against Notre Dame Batavia's backups. This shift got Alfred-Almond 16 points but the Fighting Irish easily held out for an 85-29 win.
