I’ve always been a huge fan of the Gorillaz ever since I remember being introduced to the band in, arguably, their most popular album “Demon Days” and the band has definitely come a long way since the release of that album.
The band has recently started a web series called “Song Machine,” which showcases singles and music videos from the band featuring the fictional characters that have been a staple with the band since the very beginning. One of the songs in this first season is titled “Valley of the Pagans” featuring Beck.
The song is exactly what one would expect from the Gorillaz; techno-pop instrumentation combined with vocals from both lead singer Damon Albarn (from Blur) and a collaborator (in this instance, Beck). The lyrics are also surreal, but poetic; creating strange, yet colorful, imagery in one’s head.
In summary, much like other Gorillaz songs, this is a very enjoyable and entertaining collaboration between the Gorillaz and Beck. Even though “Valley of the Pagans” doesn’t hold a candle to the band’s earlier works like “Clint Eastwood” or “Feel Good Inc.,” “Valley of the Pagans” is a below-the-radar song that is still very much enjoyable that incorporates the band’s usual trademarks and staples.
