Halsey's "Ego" isn't what you think

Alternative pop star Halsey released her song, “Ego,” on Sept. 6, 2024. The single is part of her fifth album, “The Greatest Impersonator,” set to release on Oct. 25, 2024. “Ego” is an introspective pop anthem that dives into her personal battles as an artist, self-doubt and the struggle of remaining authentic to the public eye.

Ashley Frangipane, known by the anagram Halsey, has remained an impactive performer and visual artist since her 2015 debut album, “Badlands.” Halsey has remained open about her mental health conflicts and relationships to the public through her music. This openness quickly garnered the attention of many fans, predominantly in the teenage demographic, with many relating to her struggles. Her industrial sound made her songs blow up and skyrocketed her to fame. Since then, she has released three albums that all vary in production and sound, but similarly have a very raw and imaginative feel that give insight to what goes on in her life and mind.

“Ego” seamlessly carries this same raw feel about her mental battles as her last album, “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power." Halsey alludes to her self-perception and how her ego affects this. It reflects her mindset on her worth and how she feels she has been deteriorating because of the fake front she has been putting up. It is repeated in the chorus that “nothing’s as it seems” and that she isn’t “really that happy being" herself. This is further reinforced by the music video in which masculine and feminine versions of Halsey are fighting in a Mr. and Mrs. Smith-like showdown in a house. This, of course, is the battle between her and her ego mentally, but it remains unclear which side of her is the ego and which side is actually herself.

Musically, the song carries an atmospheric production that complements its introspective lyrics. It opens with a strong synth mixed in with a guitar sound. Along with that, an upbeat jingle contrasts the emotionally deep lyrics. As it continues into the pre-chorus, the melodic tension builds through percussion until the drop into the chorus. The track is anchored by a pulsating beat and layered synths that create a brooding backdrop while simultaneously remaining energetic and upbeat. The production is both modern and edgy, underscoring Halsey’s vocal delivery and adding to the song’s emotional depth. The interplay of electronic elements with a strong rhythmic drive enhances the song's intensity, making it not just a lyrical exploration but a powerful auditory experience.

To me, it feels distinctly “Halsey-like,” just a different sound from what most are used to. She’s known for her genre-blending approach, mixing elements of pop, alternative and electronic music in a way that feels both fresh and accessible. I strongly value her ability to change the musical makeup of a song, but still have her own formula of lyrics that allow her to remain the open and honest version of herself that can show vulnerability with her fans. She has the versatility that can range from a heart-wrenching ballad to an energetic anthem, and I believe this versatility will be showcased even more in "The Greatest Impersonator." Her voice has a unique blend of huskiness and clarity, which allows her to convey a wide range of emotions with authenticity. Her lyrics often delve into personal and societal themes, adding a layer of depth to her work that many find relatable and thought-provoking. Overall, Halsey's artistry stands out for its emotional resonance and innovative sound.

Halsey has played with her sound for years and has songs that can fall into a wide range of genres. “Ego” is a new addition to her range that is not a misstep in her expression as an artist.
