Exploring John Legend's "My Favorite Dream"

John Legend released his tenth studio album, "My Favorite Dream," on Friday, August 30. It is his debut lullaby and sing-along album. It follows the release of Legend's album, "LEGEND," in 2022.

John Legend, born John Roger Stephens, is an American singer, songwriter, and actor known for his distinct blend of R&B, soul and pop. His 2004 debut album, “Get Lifted," achieved platinum status, largely driven by the success of his hit single “Ordinary People." He would later take home three Grammy Awards due to the success of this album: Best R&B Album, Best R&B Male Vocal Performance and Best New artist. In 2006, he showcased his musical talents by performing at Super Bowl XL in Detroit. His album, “Love in the Future," was released in 2013. This album, which featured the hit single “All of Me," was a major success, becoming one of Legend’s most iconic songs and achieving widespread acclaim. 

There are 15 songs on this album. The lead single of this album is "L-O-V-E." It is a family friendly album, with original lullabies and children’s songs that young kids could listen to. The album cover features John Legend as a child, with childlike drawings in the margins. Nine original songs are on the album, with Legend also covering two popular classics, "Three Little Birds" and "You are My Sunshine."

A major standout song on "My Favorite Dream" is "L-O-V-E," the fourth track of the album. This song features Legend's wife, Chrissy Teigen, and their kids, Luna and Miles. It delves deeply into themes of love, blending wholesome lyrics with soulful melodies. Childlike artwork illustrated by eight-year-old Luna is showcased in the song's music video. It is a beautiful song that is a highlight of the album.

Another high point is "Great, Great Day," the thirteenth track of the album. It is an uplifting song that’s all about finding joy and celebrating the good moments in life. The lyrics highlight simple pleasures and moments of happiness, and emphasize the power of a positive mindset. It is an inspiring song that teaches the importance of optimism. 

The final track of the album is "Maybe." This song by Fisher-Price was the inspiration behind this album. It is a playful and whimsical tune that is catchy, aimed at engaging younger audiences. It focuses on fun and imagination and incorporates these elements with a simple melody. It is a straightforward and easy song for children to understand and encourages sing-alongs and interactive play.
