BROCKPORT, NY - It wasn’t the prettiest of games for the Brockport Blue Devils football team, as they were crushed 48-21 by the East/WOIS Eagles. The Blue Devils were dominated in every aspect of the game, as they gave up 572 total yards of offense. 295 of those yards came on the ground.

“I think the biggest thing is that we showed heart - our boys came out and we battled and they showed resilience,” Brockport head coach Paul Carella said. “I’m proud of my guys. One of the biggest things that I’d say to anybody in any sport is you got to be tough, and I think in the second half, we played a bit tougher, and we showed that we can just battle through adversity.”

Blue Devils senior quarterback Landon Scott was one of the few bright spots on offense. Although he threw an interception, he went 10-for-22 for 189 yards and three passing touchdowns.

Senior wide receivers Azay Odey and Tyler Judd were Scott’s favorite targets in the game. Odey ended the day with two catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns. As for Judd, he recorded three catches for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Junior running back Ryan Miller received most of the carries after senior running back Brayden Scaccia left the game during halftime with an injury. Miller racked up 30 yards on 16 carries. As for Scaccia, he recorded four carries for 15 yards.

“[Our gameplan] I think it was to spread it out, and it was sort of divide and conquer, where we could run the ball, make them pull their guys in so that we could pass,” Judd said. “But we weren’t doing good in the run game as much, so we had to rely on the pass game. I think in the second half, we were just able to make more moves and get open.”

Brockport started off the first quarter going three-and-out and then allowed the Eagles to drive down the field 65 yards to score a touchdown. It occurred on a 10-yard carry from Da’Mari Green. The extra point was missed, however, by senior kicker Yusuf Abdi.

The touchdown kickstarted things for East/WOIS’s offense. They proceeded to score three straight drives after punting once while the defense forced Brockport to punt five straight times before the end of the first half.

East/WOIS picked up where they left off to start the second half. They had a 52-yard drive that was capped off by a 5-yard rushing touchdown from senior quarterback Tyler Benjamin, giving them a 34-0 lead.

Carella lit a fired underneath Brockport’s offense after being animated on the sidelines in the first half. The Blue Devils picked up their first touchdown of the day thanks to Scott throwing a 50-yard dot to Ozey on second-and-7.

“I think our boys just understood that East wasn’t going to relinquish, they weren’t going to give up and that we needed to come out and battle,” Carella said. “Our guys showed that. I think the parents and our fans should be proud of our kids. I know that I am.”

Although East scored on their next possession thanks to a 66-yard passing touchdown caught by senior wide receiver Kelvin Shephard, Brockport’s offense continued to stay productive. The Blue Devils got the ball back on a muffed punt after failing to score on their previous drive. They took advantage of the turnover as Odey caught a 30-yard touchdown pass to make it a 41-14 game in favor of the Eagles.

“Coach said ‘go make a play,’” Odey said. “I wanted to go make a play.”

The Blue Devils looked like they were firing on all cylinders as they entered the fourth quarter. After giving up a 30-yard passing touchdown, Brockport drove down the field 67 yards to score thanks to a 40-yard receiving touchdown from Judd. However, Brockport lost their groove on their next possession after recovering an onside kick. Scott would throw an interception to Green to seal their fate, as the Eagles helped chew the clock to secure their 48-21 win.

Brockport falls to 4-2 on the season with the loss. They will look to bounce back when they hit the road to take on Canandaigua next Friday at 7 p.m.
