On Friday night under the bright lights of the Brockport field, the Blue Devils stepped up to the occasion. In a game that saw back and forth momentum shifts and 6 lead changes over the course of the game. It was Brockport that held on for a storybook-esque ending to their homecoming night.
The first big play of the game came during Greece Athenas opening drive. They forced a field goal deep in the redzone that ended up being muffed by the snap hold
er. The Blue Devils got their first bit of momentum off a failed FG Kick.
The momentum would be a bit short lived, as they ended up giving the ball right back to the Trojans. After a drive in which Junior QB Jayden Rapp converted a 4th and 10 down with a QB run. They finally hit the end zone off a sweep by WR Khorie Reaves.
The Blue Devils responded with their first deep offensive drive of the day. Sophomore Quarterback Landon Scott drove the field and rushed in his first touchdown of the game. Carrying his team down the field and finishing the job himself. They failed to convert a 2-point conversion but still only trailed 7-6.
At just over the 2 minute mark in the 2nd quarter, it was Brockport senior Luca Courtney that was able to perfectly charge in and block an Athena punt. Giving his team amazing field position that QB Landon Scott did not misuse. His 2nd rushing touchdown of the day gave the Blue Devils the lead and a huge momentum shift heading into the locker room at half time. As they now led 14-7.
The Trojans would refuse to lie down though, after an opening drive touchdown to start the 2nd half. It was Quarterback/Linebacker Jayden Rapp who got a pick-six off the opposing quarterback. A great read let him jump the route and throw to Tyler Judd and walk in for an easy touchdown to make it 21-14.
Momentum seemed a bit lost for Brockport as the game stayed scoreless until the 2:20 mark of the 3rd quarter. Quarterback Landon Scott refused to give in though as he threw a
beautiful deep ball down the sideline to Tyler Judd and scored an over 50-yard touchdown. Still trailing after a failed 2-point conversion, they forced a turnover on downs to drive down the field again. This time its RB Brayden Scaccia who ran it in for 6 and gave Brockport a 26-21 lead.
The Trojans drove down the field after, with Rapp able to hit one of his favorite targets TE Connor Osier for a huge touchdown and also the 2-point conversion. Giving Athena a 29-26 lead with 3:28 to go.
It took another heroic effort from Sophomore Quarterback Landon Scott to drive Brockport down field. With the homecoming crowd roaring for the Blue Devils. He was able to run in his 4th touchdown of the game. To give Brockport a 32-29 lead they did not give up.
Landon Scott willed his team to this win going through the air on the ground and making several key plays at DB. He walked off the field a homecoming hero for his high school and held his head high through a game full of adversity.
For Brockport they advanced to a 2-2 record and next week go on the road to Canandaigua to take on the Braves. Greece Athena after falling to a 2-2 record will head back home looking for a bounce back game against Irondequoit.
