Brockport shuts out Hartwick

BROCKPORT, NY-- With one of the best starts in program history, Brockport women’s soccer continued their unbeaten streak in the Empire 8 conference after a 4-0 victory against Hartwick College on Saturday. Brockport currently stands on top of the Empire 8 table with nine points in three games.

Sophomore midfielder Amelia Breton opened the scoring line for Brockport in the 41st minute of the game. Graduate student forward Jaylah Cossin scored a goal in the 45th minute which was assisted by senior forward Sierra Edwards. In the 55th minute of the game junior midfielder Lyndsey Miller scored from outside the box. Miller scored a brace in the 58th minute which was assisted by Cossin to give Brockport a 4-0 lead.

“Honestly, I think our composure as a team overall has really helped us,” said Miller. “Even in the beginning where we had some slip ups, I think we just really brought the energy, and we knew we had to get the job done and I think we did that today.”

Brockport is one of only two teams nationally that has yet to concede any goals this season. This is the fourth time in the program’s history that the team has won seven straight games to start the year. This is the first time in program history that the Golden Eagles have not conceded a goal through eight games.

“We just try to be very committed on every play where you know it’s almost core value of ours not to give the team anything,” Brockport women’s soccer head coach Mike Idland said. “So, we make sure they try to break up the other team’s play as much as possible at kind of full intensity, and then see what the attacking part looks like from there. And that has kind of been the secret.”

Brockport started the first half in a 4-4-2 formation with a flat midfield. The Golden Eagles had 16 shots in the first half and Hartwick was limited to only one shot attempt. In the second half Brockport switched to a 4-3-3 formation. The Golden Eagles had nine shot attempts and Hartwick had two attempts.

“We switched formations, which I think allowed us to be more offensive, but we still stayed like very strong defensively,” said Miller. “I got bumped up more into the midfield which gave me more opportunities to have shots on goal, and I think that translated very well.”

Junior goalkeeper Madeline McCrosson has started in all three conference games this season and has maintained a clean sheet throughout. She played all 90 minutes and made two second-half saves.

“I feel like it really shows the hard work the team puts in everyday at practice,” said McCrosson. “But it feels really good to be able to be back there and help out with these shutouts. We knew that it was going to be a difficult game. Coming in we wanted to be ready for anything. And I think that once we settled into the game and found the back of it the first time, from that point on, it was our game, and we were able to go at them more while still holding our composure in the back.”

Next up, Brockport will be on the road to face Houghton University on Wednesday Oct. 2 in their fourth in-conference game.
