BROCKPORT, N.Y.—It was the 38th meeting between the Brockport Golden Eagles and Fredonia State Blue Devils as the Blue Devils led the all-time series 16-13-8 since 2006. A strong defensive effort by the Golden Eagles was enough to hang on and win the game 2-1.
“I thought we were pretty solid even though we made some turnovers that put us in tough spots,” Brockport head coach Brian Dickinson said. “Guys really sold out. We blocked a number of shots and deflected a number of shots. When pucks did get through David [Filak] was a rock. I am proud of the effort tonight.”
The Golden Eagles weren’t able to capitalize on scoring opportunities and the defense held the Blue Devils to just five shots on goal as neither team got on the board in the first period. Fredonia killed off two penalties in the period.
“It was a good first period,” Brockport defenseman Michael Meredith said. “We worked hard. We need to work on getting some more pucks to the net and shoot around bodies. Coming away 0-0 we will take that and come harder in the next period.”
For most of the second period, it was the same story as both teams were unable to get anything going offensively. Brockport forward Spencer Flansburg broke the stalemate with a goal at the 18:46 mark of the second period to give Brockport a 1-0 lead. This was Flansburg’s fourth goal of the season and team-leading 10th point.

“It was a good line rush,” Flansburg said. “We had lots of speed and energy. I pulled a terrible decision of a move and my brother [Schuyler Flansburg] saved the day with a pass from the point. This guy is working his tail off in the net and I was able to get a tap in.”
The Golden Eagles got some insurance in the third period at the 16:50 mark after Connor Macleer found Kaleb Miller who netted a short-handed goal that just snuck past the pad of Fredonia goalie Charles-Anthony Barbeau to make it a 2-0 game.
With less than 40 seconds to go in the game, the puck deflected off the skate of Fredonia forward Antonie St. Onge and into the net cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Brockport defense held strong and didn’t allow another goal to come away with the victory.
Brockport Goalie David Filak saved all 32 shots on goal by the Blue Devils.
With the win, Brockport improves to 4-9-2 on the season. The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Friday when they host Manhattanville University for some UCHC conference action. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
