As we anticipate the start of 2025, it's time to look back on the memorable moments from 2024, specifically in the music industry. Usher wowed audiences with his Super Bowl LVIII performance, the same night Beyonce surprised fans with the announcement of “Cowboy Carter.” Up-and-coming artist Shaboozey released “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” which became a defining song of this summer. Sabrina Carpenter excited fans with the release of her sixth studio album, “Short ‘n Sweet,” and she still continues to shock fans with new “Juno” poses on her world tour. 


When thinking back on all the major moments and notable songs from 2024, you may wonder which song defined 2024. To answer this question, we at 89.1 The Point made a list the 89 top songs (plus an honorable mention) that played on our station the most this year. Learn about each of these top songs below, with honest reviews directly from members of our station’s Music Department.


Honorable mention: “Been Like This” – Meghan Trainor and T-Pain

Meghan Trainor and T-Pain collaborated to create “Been Like This,” a catchy top 40 song with hints of doo-wop. The lyrics focus on self confidence and body positivity, reminiscent of many of Trainor’s other songs. Trainor and T-Pain’s parts complement each other well, building the song's excitement. The music video is a fun party, filled with glitz, space and the color blue. From the opening trumpet blasts to the upbeat rhythm, this song will make you want to get up and dance -- EJ



89: “Kinky” – Bby

Bby (pronounced “baby”) is an up-and-coming alternative punk band based in London, England. Their song “Kinky,” from their debut album, “1,” showcases what it feels like to fall in love with someone. The lyrics resonate with any hopeless romantic, filled with the joy of a new relationship. The song benefits from its dominant use of electric guitars, as they hook the listener from the start of the song and add to the song’s enthusiasm -- EJ



88: “Get Him Back” – Olivia Rodrigo

“Get Him Back” is the eighth track on Olivia Rodrigo’s sophomore album “GUTS.” While her debut album “SOUR” encapsulates the sorrow that comes with heartbreak, “GUTS” is filled with confidence and rebellion. “Get Him Back” is a song about retaliation. Rodrigo sings about the anger she feels towards an ex, going as far as wanting to “key his car” and “meet his mom / just to tell her her son sucks.” This breakup anthem is bold, energetic and even made an appearance in the trailer of 2024’s “Mean Girls.” -- EJ



87: “Made For Me” – Muni Long

If you used TikTok during 2024, then you know Muni Long’s “Made For Me.” This catchy song was used for a popular trend where users would showcase who in their lives was “made for them.” However, “Made For Me” is more than just a TikTok sound, as the song earned Long nominations for an MTV Video Music Award, a BET Award and a Billboard Music Award. In the music video for this song, Long is a scientist who is constructing a man that is “made for only her. “Made For Me” has resonated deeply with listeners because of how it describes what it is like to have a close connection with someone -- EJ



86: “the boy is mine” – Ariana Grande

While many will remember 2024 as the year Ariana Grande starred as Glinda in the movie “Wicked,” we can’t forget she released her seventh studio album “Eternal Sunshine” at the beginning of March. “the boy is mine” is the third single from this album and draws inspiration from Brandy and Monica’s 1998 song that shares the same name. In this R&B song, Grande confesses her love for a certain boy and explains why he is perfect for her and no one else. In the music video for “the boy is mine,” Grande plays Catwoman and there are various celebrity appearances, including Penn Badgely, Elizabeth Gillies, Brandy and Monica -- EJ



85: “High In Low Places” – Beach Weather

“High In Low Places” is a single from alternative rock trio’s second studio album, “Melt.” The song’s strong bass gives it an apocalyptic-yet-hopeful sound, contrasting from the band’s upbeat hit 2023 single, “thoughts i have while lying in bed.” The lyrics detail compassion and companionship, as lead singer Nick Santino sings about being in his loved one’s arms. He delivers romantic lines like, “I just want to be your muse” and “I can see infinity in your eyes.” “High In Low Places” is a dark, melodic tale of enduring love that could survive an apocalypse -- EJ



84: “Strangers” – Kenya Grace

Up-and-coming artist Kenya Grace’s “Strangers” is a hit single from her 2024 album “The After Taste.” In this dance song, Grace details the cycle of falling in and out of love, from the excitement of a new relationship to the whiplash that comes when it ends. While the lyrics have themes of heartbreak, the song itself is fast-paced, electronic and energetic. “Strangers” not topped the Official UK Singles Chart, but also earned Grace the iHeartRadio Music Award for Dance Song of the Year -- EJ



83: “Houdini” – Eminem

“Houdini” is a single from Eminem’s most recent album, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce).” This song is about the rapper’s comeback, which is part of the album’s overarching theme of Eminem’s battle with his persona, Slim Shady. The lyrics are filled with witty and topical references, just like you would expect from Eminem. The song’s music video matches the action in Eminem’s lyrics, as it takes place in a comic-book-esq reality where Eminem is a superhero who has to fight Slim Shady -- EJ



82: “greedy” – Tate McRae

“greedy” is the lead single from Tate McRae’s sophomore album, “think later.” McCrae wrote this song to empower other women, as she sings about wanting herself over men. “greedy” is positive, catchy and showcases McRae’s vocals. The music video for “greedy” takes place inside of an ice skating rink, a nod to McRae’s Canadian roots. This motif of hockey is present in “think later,” as McCrae wears goalie pads on the cover photo of the album. With impressive dancing, the music video further encapsulates the themes of positivity and self-love that the song promotes -- EJ



81: “One More Time” – blink-182

“One More Time” is a blink-182 single that comes from their album with the same name. In “One More Time,” blink-182 diverts from their signature high-energy punk sound. Opening with the strumming of an acoustic guitar, the song has a slow tempo. In the lyrics of the song, the band reflects on where they were at the start of their careers to where they are now. In the “One More Time” music video, blink-182 performs at significant locations, like the sets of some of their other popular music videos or the spots with some of their most notable live performances. This retrospective song can fill any blink-182 fan with nostalgia -- EJ



80: “Wild Ones” – Jessie Murph and Jelly Roll

Jessie Murph and Jelly Roll’s “Wild Ones” is a fusion of hip-hop and country music. In the song, the duo sings about wanting to be with someone adventurous and carefree. Even though “Wild Ones” has a slow pace, it is filled with action. This bold collaboration peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and earned a 3-time Platinum certification in the United States -- EJ



79: “Taste” – Sabrina Carpenter

“Taste” is one of many songs from Sabrina Carpenter’s 2024 album “Short ‘n Sweet” that had a lot of charting success, entering the Billboard Hot 100 at the number 2 spot. It’s obvious why “Taste” is a hit – the combination of its catchy beat and tongue-in-cheek lyrics create a song that would make anyone want to sing along. Carpenter’s confidence shines in this song, as she sings about how she’s unfazed that someone she used to be with is now dating someone new. The relationship drama comes to life in the “Taste” music video, where Carpenter and actress Jenna Ortega duel over Carpenter’s fictitious ex, “Death Becomes Her” style -- EJ



78: “Superstar” – Rainbow Kitten Surprise

“Superstar” is the fifteenth song from alternative rock band Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s fourth studio album, “Love Hate Music Box.” This anthemic song captures what it feels like to be successful and prove yourself to those who doubted you. The song is filled with the theme of triumph, as lead singer Ela Melo boasts in the chorus “I’m your superstar again/I was always gonna win.” This confidence and freedom from negativity is present in “Superstar’s” celebratory and fun-filled music video -- EJ



77: “So Much (For) Stardust” – Fall Out Boy

“So Much (For) Stardust” is the thirteenth song from Fall Out Boy’s album that shares the same name. “So Much (For) Stardust” is not only the band’s most recent album, but the band’s first album in five years. The song opens with a strum of a violin to draw listeners in. Throughout the song, the consistent combination of sounds roaring from the drums and guitar remind listeners that Fall Out Boy is back. The lyrics detail the downside of success, as lead singer Patrick Stump sings “thought we had it all” various times during the song’s chorus. The “So Much (For) Stardust” music video added to this monumental comeback by featuring Miami Heat player and known emo Jimmy Butler -- EJ



76: “Sofa King” – Royel Otis

While indie duo Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic, known as Royel Otis, went viral this year for their popular covers of Sophie Ellis Bextor’s “Murder On The Dancefloor” and The Cranberries’ “Linger,” 2024 was also a successful year for their original music with the release of their first studio album “PRATTS & PAIN.” The song “Sofa King,” originally released ahead of their EP “Sofa Kings” and later featured on “PRATTS & PAIN’s” extended version, is about wanting to be a better person than you currently are. The beat is relaxed and pensive, allowing Royel Otis’ message to resonate with listeners -- EJ



75: “Friendly Fire” – Linkin Park 

Releasing their new album on Apr. 12, 2024, “Friendly Fire" is the twentieth song on the album. This rock band screams emo and it’s quite enjoyable for listeners who enjoy this type of music. Within the song, there seems to be a sense of guilt and regret, from losing the one who was most dear to them -- MW



74: “Feel Like That (featuring Bradley Nowell)” – Sublime & Stick Figure

This song has such a groovy indie feel to it, a song a surfer would possibly listen to during their free time. The band really brings listeners back to the 80s-90s with this song, and I appreciate how different it is from songs nowadays -- MW



73: “Too Much” – girl in red 

Despite the upbeat tune it has behind it, this song by girl in red has a troubling meaning behind it. Her partner is giving her a hard time and putting her down instead of caring about her. This song may be relatable to listeners who have the same issue or have suffered through this before -- MW



72: “Overcompensate” – Twenty One Pilots  

Starting off strong with the first song of Twenty One Pilots’ newest album, “Clancy,” the band has done a fantastic job with this song. The different languages really made the song stand out, and I love how unique it was. They really put their all into this album and I’m sure it changed many fans’ lives  -- MW



71: “Please Please Please” – Sabrina Carpenter  

The message behind this song is quite interesting. Embarrassed to be around her partner because of their behavior, she begs for them to act right. It is not exactly my cup of tea, but whoever enjoys songs about messy relationships will enjoy this song by Sabrina Carpenter  -- MW



70: “Loving You” – Cannons 

Released On Oct. 13. 2023, Loving you by the Cannons have brought back the early 2000s. The calmness behind the beat brings a nostalgic vibe, which is quite enjoyable for listeners who aren’t into anything too dramatic or loud  -- MW



69: “One Of The Girls” – The Weeknd, Jennie and Lily-Rose Depp 

One of the girls by the Weeknd himself, who collabed with Jennie and Lily-Rose Depp, released this song on Dec. 8, 2023. This song can be heard in the series, The Idol, which was created by Sam Levinson, The Weeknd, and Reza Fahim. Just like some of his other songs, it has a seductive message to it  -- MW



68: “Sinner” – The Last Dinner Party 

Alternative rock band, The Last Dinner Party, released “Sinner” on June 30, 2023. The band singing about the sins that were given by their previous lover and wanting to wash them away, which some listeners can relate to. Another song that would be perfect for the 3 a.m. playlist  -- MW



67: “Lovin’ on Me” – Jack Harlow 

“Hitmaker of tomorrow” Jack Harlow released “Lovin On Me” on Nov. 10, 2024. The lyrics are very interesting to say the least, but he seems quite passionate about the woman  -- MW



66. “Belong Together” – Mark Ambor 

Switching to the indie side of the music industry, Mark Ambor released “Belong Together” on Feb. 16, 2024. I’m quite a fan of the indie genre but this song just isn’t for me but for those who love this type of indie (or songs about love) will enjoy this song. I will say this song is quite peaceful and the use of the acoustic guitar is pleasing to listen to  -- MW



65: “Beautiful People (Stay High)” – Black Keys 

 The start of the song reminds me of a commercial but then they really get into the rock once it starts. It does also have a sense of 2010s within the beat of the song. Personally, this song isn’t for me but whoever is interested in or enjoys garage rock, this song by Black Keys is just for them  -- MW



64: “Up All Night (featuring Nile Rodgers)” – The Ramona Flowers

A collab between The Ramona Flowers and Nile Rodgers, they have released “Up All Night” on Oct. 22, 2021. This song gives the idea of driving late at night with your friends and blasting it along the road. The song also gives a sense of the early 2000s, bringing listeners back to the past, to the good old days -- MW



63: “Dark Matter” – Pearl Jam 

Bringing the 90s into the 2020s, Pearl Jam released “Dark Matter” on Apr. 19, 2024. Compared to songs nowadays, they bring a nostalgic beat and tempo to the new generation. It’s different than the songs that are currently being released but I appreciate the idea of something different and unique -- MW



62: “Broken Man” – St. Vincent 

On Apr. 26, 2024, singer St, Vincent released “Broken Man”. Her idea of music is quite unique. The use of distortion and instruments really made the song stand out, which is perfect for people who enjoy alternative songs as such. Her voice giving an echoey sound also added to the vibe of the song  -- MW



61: “Make You Mine” – Madison Beer  

On Feb. 9, 2024, singer- songwriter Madison Beer released “Make You Mine”. The song has an euphoric vibe behind it, making it a song that would be heard at a club or at 3 in the morning. It isn’t dramatic or overly complicated with different beats playing in the background, it is simple but still enjoyable  -- MW



60: "PATHETIC" – SMITH

"Pathetic" by Smith is a gritty, emotionally charged song that delves into feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy. The track features raw guitar riffs and a powerful vocal performance, giving it a punk-rock edge. Lyrically, the song addresses the vulnerability of confronting one’s insecurities and the emotional toll of feeling unworthy. The song’s fast-paced tempo adds to the intensity, creating a sense of urgency and frustration. Despite its raw tone, the track resonates with listeners who have felt the sting of self-criticism -- JT



59: "exes" – Tate McRae  

Tate McRae’s "Exes" is a bittersweet breakup anthem that blends pop and indie elements to capture the emotional aftermath of love lost. The song’s catchy melody and relatable lyrics about closure, heartbreak, and moving on make it an instant hit with listeners. McRae’s vocal performance is raw and vulnerable, conveying the pain of seeing an ex move on. The production is minimal but effective, with a focus on the lyrics and McRae’s voice. With over 1.5 million videos on TikTok that use the song as an audio, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” is a candid expression of unwavering love. The song’s composition is unique, as Eilish’s vocals sound slightly echoey and distorted, heightening the song’s playfulness. “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” is joyous, wholesome and relatable for any listener who has a special someone in their life -- EJ



44: “Mustang” – Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon, known for their 2008 hit “Use Somebody,” released “Mustang” as the lead single off their ninth album, “Can We Please Have Fun.” “Mustang” is defiant and edgy. The lyrics lead singer Caleb Followill sings are apathetic yet filled with intrigue. His whaling vocals pair well with the song’s strong baseline, creating its bold tone. Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars wowed fans this fall with their apocalyptic-yet-heartouching ballad, “Die With A Smile.” These two monumental artists joined forces to create a hit that demonstrates love’s power over disaster. Mars and Gaga sing separately at first, each showing off the impressiveness of their vocal abilities. They then sing together, and their voices blend to add to the emotion of the star studded duet. This is a song we’ll be singing along to long after the year ends-- EJ



42: “Fortnight (featuring Post Malone)” – Taylor Swift

In “Fortnight,” the lead single from “The Tortured Poets Department,” Taylor Swift laments about how she is struggling to come to terms with a relationship that ended after it only lasted two weeks. “Fortnight” is contemplative, as Swift compares how miserable she currently is to how happy she was then. Post Malone’s feature gives the song depth, adding harmonies and echoes to Swift’s tale of heartbreak -- EJ



41: “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” – Tommy Richman

“MILLION DOLLAR BABY” is arguably one of the defining songs of the summer of 2024. Becoming a viral hit that's been featured in over 9 million TikTok videos, “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” sounds like a party converted into song form. It’s effortlessly fun – Tommy Richman’s combinations of synths and drums create a satisfying beat, making it a song you’ll want to listen to over and over again -- EJ



40: “Pretty Vicious” – The Struts

“Pretty Vicious” is the second song on The Struts’ fourth album that shares the same name. It’s a rebellious rock hit, and its heavy use of electric guitar fills it with angst. Lead singer Luke Spiller sings about someone who uses their ability to charm those around them in a negative way, even going as far as to say he’s under their spell. “Pretty Vicious” grabs your attention for the right reasons: its bold instrumentation and dynamic storytelling -- EJ

As upbeat and groovy this beat may be, the lyrics hold up a torn-up heart. Red flags were thrown out but for a good while he couldn’t see them as if he was inexperienced with relationships. This song was the first that Blame My Youth’s Sean Van Vleet and producer Joey Moi have written together, and it signified a brand new chapter for Blame My Youth, according to Van Vleet -- MW

Missing their love and regretting not being true to their feelings, Glass Animals released this song on Apr. 3, 2024. The beat behind it has a spacey rhythm to it (at least to me), like one is floating through the milky way as they’re reminiscing about the past. Different from other songs about relationships, this single seems to be about jealousy over her lover’s ex. Her mind wanders and she’s aware they don’t talk but she can’t help but keep thinking about the ex, which may result in self-sabotage. Released on Mar. 22, 2024, the pop-rock genre is quite unique from how the usual beat of a love song sounds and it reels in many listeners -- MW

 Lied to once again by the one he thought he could trust, singer-songwriter Teddy Swims released his single on Sep. 15, 2023. This toxic relationship made him realize that he can’t let himself be manipulated anymore and must take back control of his life, resulting in letting go of their partner. The mix of R&B and soul really makes the song stand out and sound more powerful -- MW



22: “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” – Shaboozey  

Switching up the genre, the country singer released this single Apr. 12, 2024. Quite the upbeat song about partying at the bar until morning or until they get kicked out for all the ruckus that is being made. I’m not the biggest fan of country but there are some country artists who know how to make a good country song, and Shaboozey is one of them. So, whoever is a fan of country will enjoy this song -- MW 


21: “Sad In Carolina” – Dexter and the Moonrocks 

Switching up the genre to their very own mix, the band’s western space grunge has brought a different vibe to the music industry. The mix of alternative and country adds more personality to their songs and the band itself. Despite the rhythm, the lyrics hold a saddening meaning. Stuck in a toxic relationship, taking blame for what it has become until they realize that in the end, they were never the problem, but they lack communication -- MW



20: “Dopamine” – Sum 41 

Bringing back the early 2000s, Canadian band Sum 41 released this song on March. 29, 2024. Even in the song, there’s a hint of the iconic song “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers within the beat, which just makes the song even better. Despite how good it sounds, the message behind it is quite depressing. Only wanting to be with the other but soon learning that they were just being used -- MW

Tired of what life gives on Earth, whether it is heartbreak or pain, SZA dreams of how life would be on Saturn. Filled with desperation and dreams, the song has a calm tune to it and some could even relate to its message. It’s quite the song that could be listened to at night and sounds so much better considering how much different the vibes are when it is late at night -- MW

Forever worried for the one they care about; they assure them that he will always be there for them. If they are alone in the darkness, he will find a way to light up their path. Shinedown’s “A Symptom of Being Human” is the tenth song on their 2022 album “Planet Zero.” This rock track is slow and melodic and its lyrics detail the struggle of the human experience.
