When you reach the top what do you do next? Some just sit and admire their success. But the best, keep going. The best continue pushing and trying to beat their self-set records. Since nothing stops progress more than a content heart.
In 2015 Børns released their very first album, and a few of the songs on album managed to top the Billboard charts. Using this new-found success to launch their career, Børns recently released their new record, which they titled: Blue Madonna. This new album continued the artists favor for futuristic sounds, and techno music. In fact, one of the songs on the album (which was released on January 12, 2018) has managed to top the Billboard 200. The song that accomplished this was actually the same tune, which the album is named after: Blue Madonna. It seems that listeners feel that this two minutes and 19 second song stands out from the rest. It has an easy going feel, and a laid-back flow; however, if one takes a closer look at the lyrics they will find that this is not the case. The song, and the whole album, is laced with sexual innuendos. This particular song is all about two strangers sharing a night together, and even though they do not even know each other’s names…They cannot get the image of one another out of their heads. This song left such an impression on people that it peaked at the 49th position.
Anyone who is even semi-familiar with the band knows that their style has been critiqued in the past. Børns has been criticized before for their “dry” or “unenthusiastic” sound. Some feel that this type of musical style just bores out the listeners. Due to this, the one song on this album that seems to be heavily critiqued is “God Save Our Young Blood.” Since many feel that the only reason that this song went through, was to make money off Lana Del Rey. Both her and Børns have the same record label, so common opinion is that she is only there to help the record sell more albums. In addition, many felt that having Børns and Lana in the same song was musically a poor choice, since both singers have similar styles. Two somber voices make for a very dull song; however, all of this hate did not seem to have much of an impact on the overall success of the album.
I personally love the futuristic sound of this band, and I have found myself listening to this album quite a lot. Plus, if you consider the lyrics to most of the songs, it is truly confessions of consensual love and shared nights. There is something truly beautiful about that…Dull or not.
