If you have been online at all recently, then you’ve most likely heard of Doja Cat’s recent viral hit, MOOO!, which helped the young singer/songwriter achieve mainstream glory in the past several weeks. Due to the massive amount of attention the catchy tune has gotten over the past several weeks, many have turned their attention to Doja Cat’s grossly underrated LP, Amala , a debut of epic proportions.
Although Amala was released in late March of this year, it has begun to slowly gain traction due to Cat’s recent success. If I were to describe Amala in one sentence, it’s basically like being caught inside a dreamy trap house, sticky and sweet. From the moment Amala starts, Doja’s voice goes down amazingly smooth on each track, like melted chocolate. Especially on more upbeat tracks such as “Cookie Jar” or “Go to Town”, Doja is bold and confident in her presentation of lyrics to her audience. Her use of various musical styles and beats could easily be compared to a seven-layer cake: although each layer has its own flavor, they work together in order to create a harmonious final bite. In Doja Cat’s case, her use of multiple beats of varying speeds and her laid-back lyrics create an incredible flow that leaves listeners in awe.
After listening to this album, I can confidently say that Doja Cat has created an entirely new genre with her dreamy rhythms and lyrics, sprinkling them over her listeners like a fairy godmother waving her wand over a princess. Everything about this album encourages listeners to be more lighthearted in their interactions and provides an escape from the uptight climate we are currently experiencing as a society. I believe that we all need that one musician who helps us unwind after a long day full of ups and downs and only asks that we enjoy what they put out without taking themselves too seriously. Currently, Doja Cat is on tour promoting Amala with various dates throughout the U.S and Canada so if you’re looking to find a new artist to add to your ever growing list of faves, take a listen! You definitely won’t regret it.
