Josh Taerk: Here's to Change

Updated: Dec 7, 2023

★★★

This album takes alternative to a whole new level. Throughout a majority of the album, the singer song-writer Josh Taerk takes his listeners on a journey within themselves. As the name and the first song of the album, “Here’s to Change” as well as the second song “The Mirror”, both embody his view on change as a positive adventure. While listening to it, I felt like I could go out into the world and make something of myself. Similar to this, the rest of the album seems to follow in its footsteps with a sense of spirituality in most.

I happen to really enjoy the song “Take a Chance on Me” based on its way of making you think. With the constant reminder to today’s generation of love and togetherness, this song preaches the thought that love can come as a surprise at times, unexpectedly, causing despair in most cases where you would crave attention. He represents that soul throughout his lyrics for this one in particular. This makes him more of a gentler artist than most, resembling the group Daughtry in some instances while at the same time, differentiating himself with his choice in words.

In rating this, I was very in between based on his genre because I sensed both a country vibe as well as modern. For a few of his songs in between, like “Wise Man” and “Tomorrow’s an”, he also gave a gospel vibe off as if he were referring to God each time. In every song, there wasn’t much of a difference in each, however, they all seemed to compliment the other. All of them were slower paced, sticking strictly to the alternative route. This became repetitive at times but I like the music. It can be refreshing at times to hear songs such as these in one sitting. The only ones to really stand out above the rest were the ones mentioned. Overall, the album works well for the artist for the time being but I hope he grows more with his content.
